When you're working hard to balance your blood sugar, lose weight, and heal your metabolism, it's easy to accidentally slow yourself down with some common health foods and habits. Let's break down some of the top sneaky culprits I see all the time with my clients — and what to do instead.
🥜 Nuts & Nut Butters
Nuts seem like the perfect snack — full of fat, fiber, and easy to grab. But beware! Many nuts are high in carbs and can stall your progress.
👉 Almonds have about 15g carbs per 100g, while pecans (4g), Brazil nuts (4g), and macadamia nuts (5g) are much lower and safer in moderation.👉 Nut butters? Easy to overdo. A spoon here, a spoon there… and suddenly you’ve eaten 500+ calories.
Coach Tip: Stick with a small handful (about 1 oz), and avoid snacking between meals — even on the “healthy stuff.”
🧀 Dairy Overload
Cutting carbs? Great! But many people go heavy on cheese, cream, and yogurt to fill the gap — and that can backfire.
🧀 Dairy has a moderate insulin response, and too much can lead to bloating, cravings, or slow weight loss.📏 Try to stay under 4 oz per day and choose high-fat, organic options when possible.
☕ Fatty Beverages
Yes, your bulletproof coffee or creamy tea might keep you full — but here's the truth:
Even if you're in fat-burning mode, your body will burn the dietary fat from your beverage instead of your stored body fat. That means your fat-fueled drink could be stalling your results.
Try Coffee, Tea with a little Half & Half
Bone Broth: reduce or cut the fat a bit
🚫 Natural & Artificial Sweeteners
This is a big one — even “zero-calorie” sweeteners can keep cravings alive and confuse your metabolism.
I’ve seen it time and time again:❌ Clients stall on weight loss, struggle with hunger, or hit a plateau...✅ They cut all sweeteners — even stevia — and everything improves within days. Energy goes up. Cravings down. Weight starts moving again.
Coach Tip: Don’t be afraid to go “cold turkey” on sweeteners for a few weeks. You might be shocked at how much easier fasting becomes.
